The NIU men’s golf team will swing into action this weekend coming off an eighth-place finish in the University of Minnesota Invitational last weekend.
The Huskies will travel to the University of Northern Iowa to participate in the Northern Iowa Fall Classic beginning Friday at 8 a.m.
The 72-hole tournament, which is scheduled to run through Sunday, will be played at three Cedar Falls-Waterloo golf courses; Sunnyside Country Club, Beaver Hills Country Club and Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.
The Huskies have excelled in the past at the annual tournament, including a second-place tie in 1985.
“We have played well there in the past,” said Jack Pheanis, NIU men’s golf coach. “But the main reason I like the tourney is because it’s 72 holes. Everyone gets a great opportunity to play a lot of golf on some very good courses.”
Defending Big 10 champion University of Illinois is a favorite along with the University of Wisconsin, Pheanis said.
The NIU women’s golf team will journey to Illinois State University for the 28th annual Redbird Invitational this weekend.
The tournament will be played on the par-73 ISU Golf Course beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.
“I’m excited to see us play a course like ISU’s this week,” said NIU women’s golf coach Pam Tyska.
Tyska hopes to finish among the top-three teams, pointing out that a lot of the Huskies from Illinois have played the course before.
“The course is a little bit easier than the two we started the season with,” Tyska said, in reference to Iowa State’s Veenker Memorial and Ohio State’s Scarlet.
“The players had to be very accurate with their shots and that should help this week,” Tyska said.
The NIU women’s tennis team will swing on up to Milwaukee for a match-up with Marquette University at 2 p.m. Sunday.
NIU sophomore Kathi Kennedy is coming off an undefeated weekend at the Indiana University Invitational where she defeated Amy Lichon (Miami, Ohio), Dana Pearson (Purdue), Heather Richter (Purdue), and Michelle Toy (SIU).
