Alcohol involved in fatal accident
September 19, 1988
Police reports indicate NIU student Karri Botz, 17, 751 Grant Towers North, had been drinking prior to the Saturday morning accident that claimed her life.
Botz was killed when a motorcycle and a car struck her while she was crossing westbound on Annie Glidden Road, just north of Crane Drive, outside the crosswalk. She was returning with friends from a party in the Greek Row area.
“My understanding is the driver of the motorcycle did not (drink before the accident) but the pedestrian did,” DeKalb Police Lt. Charles Beierlotzer said.
He said the driver of the car, Kent House, 24, of Monroe Center, also had been drinking prior to the accident, however the amount was within legal limits.
Police reports indicate the motorcycle driver, Christopher Hennessy, 24, of Park Ridge, requested an alcohol test. He was given a breathalyzer which revealed a 0.00 blood alcohol level.
DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said results from alcohol tests on Botz will be available Wednesday or Thursday. He said the second impact, from the car, was what killed Botz who was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:19 p.m.
Police reports state that after Botz was struck by the motorcycle, she was thrown into the path of the auto, which dragged her several hundred feet.
The report indicates that House was not sure he had hit Botz, and he did not know she was being dragged under his car. Hennessy knew he had hit Botz but did not see what happened after he struck her, police reports state.
