Neptune North to furnish computer lab for students
September 5, 1988
NIU Student Housing Services is adding another computer lab to its three existing labs.
Joe Crooks, graduate coordinator of computer labs in residence halls, said, “On October first, Neptune North will join Grant North, Stevenson South and Douglas Hall in the residence halls which have computer labs.”
Crooks said, “Grant North, which was the first lab, opened two years ago. The computer labs were designed for convenience and to add an extra dimension to residence hall life.” He said there are a total of 68 computers in the three open labs. Each computer cost $1,300. NIU Housing Director Don Buckner said the computer laboratories are available to students at no extra cost.
The labs are available to residence hall occupants and English students whose classes are taught on computers in the Douglas Hall lab. Ken Isacson, who works at the Douglas Hall lab and will manage the Neptune North lab, said 23 English classes are taught in the Douglas Hall lab at various times during the week. Isacson said, “English students can reserve a computer the day before it is needed for a two-hour period.”
He said, “The busiest day is Sunday, especially Sunday nights.” During the last semester, 1,000 different students used the Douglas Hall lab. Isacson said he believes the labs have been very successful.
Only Douglas Hall offers the “Discover Career Exploration” program, which aids students in choosing a career and selecting the best route of career pursuit.
