Speech on journalism to be given

Donald Grubb, former NIU journalism professor and founder of the NIU journalism department, will speak Wednesday night to all interested students about the beginnings of NIU journalism.

The event is sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi in celebration of the department’s 30th anniversary and will be held in Reavis Hall room 210 at 9 p.m.

SPJ Secretary Sean Noble said Grubb was a journalism professor at NIU for more than 20 years and “almost single-handedly got the journalism department off the ground.”

Grubb taught journalism at a downstate school before coming to NIU in the late 1950s, Noble said.

SPJ Vice President Tammy Sholer said, “He (Grubb) will be speaking about the history of NIU’s journalism department and the changes that it has gone through over the last 30 years.”
