DeKalb intersections put on local dangerous lists

DeKalb area intersections were the scenes of more than 131 accidents in 1987, putting several on local “most dangerous” intersections lists.

University Police Lt. Ron Williams said, “Most intersections on campus are city streets.” He was unable to calculate which intersections on campus are the most dangerous.

The Lincoln Highway and Tenth Street intersection was reported to have the most accidents within DeKalb city limits, a DeKalb Police representative said. The intersection was the site of 21 accidents in 1987.

The second most dangerous corner in DeKalb is First Street and Hillcrest Drive, site of 17 accidents, followed by Fourth Street and Lincoln Highway, where 15 accidents occurred.

The intersection of Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue ranks as DeKalb’s fourth most dangerous, and considered the fifth most dangerous intersection is where Annie Glidden Road and Lincoln Highway meet.

Dangerous intersections outside the city limits were reported by DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott, who said 11 accidents occurred at the intersection of Peace Road and State Route 38 on DeKalb’s east side.

The intersection has a two-way stop sign, but the sheriff’s office is working with the county highway to obtain electronic signals, Scott said.

“We (the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office) don’t handle accidents inside the city,” Scott said.

Scott said the intersection of Somonauk Street and Rt. 38, the scene of 10 accidents last year, makes it the second most dangerous intersection outside of city limits.

The North First Street and Ridge Road intersection follows with seven accidents, and six accidents each occured in 1987 at the intersections of State Rt. 64 and North First Street, Barber Green Road and Somonauk Street and Rt. 38 and Malta Black Top Road.
