SA senate election results announced
September 21, 1988
In what is being called a “close election in both districts,” the fall 1988 NIU Student Association Senate roster was announced late Wednesday.
Election Commissioner Robert Perry said 751 students voted in the election, and ballots were counted four times because the election “was so close we wanted to make sure the results were right on.”
But SA Vice President Greg Bliss was unhappy about the voter turnout. “Even with all the press we received, people still walked past the polls fat, dumb and happy,” he said.
Of the 30 members of the Coalition of Students for All Students, 29 won seats on the senate.
About seven ballots were submitted with “invalidate this election” printed on them, but Bliss said any more votes “wouldn’t have made a real difference” in the election’s outcome.
SA President Paula Radtke said it was “hard to say whether students will be represented well on the senate.”
She added factions that “could get dangerous if they become polarized” might appear in the senate.
“It all depends on how motivated (senators) are to work,” she said.
A more optimistic Bliss said, “Judging by the attitudes of the newly-elected senators, I think (the senate) will be effective.”
The newly-elected senate will hold its first meeting of the year Sunday at 6 p.m., after a mandatory informational meeting for senators at 3 p.m.
