City council travel funds must be OK’d in advance

Travel funds for DeKalb City Council aldermen and the mayor must be approved in advance unless specified in the budget, as the result of a 7-0 vote by the council at its meeting July 11.

The council discussed the following items July 11:

.The council heard information concerning a proposal by Thomas Maloney to start a horse-and-carriage business in DeKalb. If Maloney complies with state and local ordinances concerning health and sanitation, the council will not need to vote on whether a business using horses within the city can be established, City Manager Mark Stevens said.

.The council approved an ordinance authorizing a sale of the city’s 640 old parking meters.

.The council voted 6-1 to approve an ordinance permitting developers to build mobile homes on the southwest side of DeKalb. Mark Powell, 7th Ward alderman, voted against the measure.

“DeKalb needs this type of housing,” 4th Ward Alderman Rita Tewksbury said.
