SA distributes funds
April 16, 1988
The Student Association Senate Sunday allocated almost $18,000 to seven club sports.
The hockey club received $8,314.30. The team’s record was 22-1-3 this year.
SA Treasurer Todd Lipscomb said the team charges its supporters a small amount for attendance at its games. The funds from this charge, which was raised from 50 cents to $1, will be applied to the rental charge of the ice rink the team uses in Rockford.
SA Sen. Matt Kouzes motioned to double the funding for vans from $437.40 to $874.80. SA Sen. Diana Turowski said because the team is successful, “I think it’s worth it.”
The track club was allocated $674. Lipscomb said new organizations usually do not receive more than $200 or $300.
SA Recreation Adviser Todd Lokken said this is the first year track has been formed, and “I don’t see why we’re inhibiting this group.” The SA Finance Committee recommended $303.30 for the track club.
SA Sen. Alexis Michael motioned to reinstate three previously zero-funded track meets on the budget. The trips were to Augustana College, Purdue University and the University of Illinois.
The fencing club received $817.01.
The volleyball club received $2,541. Volleyball club Treasurer Bob LeFevre said as club enrollment increases and its budget decreases, “there’s no way we can keep everyone interested.”
SA Sen. Aaron Burke asked LeFevre why the club is not as successful as it has been in the past.
LeFevre said, “The club has been going downhill,” but with the newly-elected officers, it is on its way back up.
The bowling club, with the women’s team ranked 11th in the nation and the men’s team ranked ninth, received $2,305.44.
The baseball club was allocated $1,463.30.
The Flying Huskies was allocated $1,835.10.
Representatives for three club sports—rugby, lacrosse and the alpine racing team—failed to attend the meeting.
Lipscomb said this shows “little respect” to the SA. He suggested if the group representatives do not attend their next scheduled budget review, the senate should vote to zero fund them.
The Office of Campus Recreation requires club sports team members to earn 10 percent of their budget.
It is “something we like them to put into the clubs themselves,” said Denise Thompson, coordinator of Club Sports and Student Employment.
She said it shows the members’ commitment to club sports.
