Davis earns plaudit

The Northern Star basketball writers have selected Rodney Davis as Player of the Year for the 1987-88 NIU men’s basketball team.

The senior guard finished the season with 26 points in a losing cause Monday, and ended his career in ninth place on the all-time NIU scoring list with 1,175 points. His 332 career assists were good for second place among Huskie assist leaders.

Davis topped all NIU scorers this season with an 18.3 points-per-game average. The 6-foot-3 floor leader also led the Huskies in minutes played with 1,011 over the 28-game schedule.

Scoring in double figures 25 times in 1987-88, Davis led the Huskies in scoring on 16 occasions this season. He also garnered a team-best 10 assists against Chicago State Feb. 27. That same night, Davis connected on 6-of-9 three pointers, tying him with Randy Norman for best three-point field goal percentage for a game (66.7 percent)in NIU history.
