Help prevent STDs
March 25, 1988
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are one of the most important health topics on the college campus today. The spread of AIDS and the serious incidence of chlamydia, herpes and gonorrhea make it imperative for students who are sexually active to be concerned with prevention of STDs.
The use of condoms is second only to abstinence as a means of preventing STDs. Condoms serve as a physical barrier to prevent the transmission of body fluids from one person to another during sexual activity. If condoms are used properly and used every time sexual activity occurs, the chances of contracting STDs in this manner are extremely low.
The University Health Service is currently taking several steps to educate students regarding STDs and increase the availability of condoms to NIU students. Effective immediately, the University Health Service Pharmacy is reducing the price of condoms. Prices will be reduced to 8/$1; 24/$2.40; 72/$6.25; 144/$12.50. This price reduction ranges from 50 to 65 percent.
Health Enhancement Services, the health promotion and disease prevention program of the University Health Service, will expand availability of free condoms. In addition to making condoms available at educational presentations and workshops, students will be able to pick up a limited number of free condoms in the lobby of the Health Service. Free distribution will be provided for the remainder of the spring semester. Information on appropriate use also is provided.
