Spring training updates: both Chicago teams win

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP)—Greg Walker hit a home run and Jack McDowell and Ken Patterson made it stand by combining on a three-hit shutout Tuesday as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds 2-0.

The 22-year-old McDowell, the fifth player chosen in last June’s amateur draft, struck out two, walked one and yielded all three Cincinnati hits in eight innings of work.

McDowell, a right-hander who led Stanford to a College World series championship in 1987 and then went 3-0 in four big-league starts with the White Sox, figures to be in the starting rotation.

Patterson, a left-hander acquired last season from the Yankees and vying for a spot in the Chicago bullpen, retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the save.

Non-rostered outfielder Paul O’Neill had two of Cincinnati’s hits, both singles, off McDowell.

Lance Johnson doubled in the first inning off Reds’ starter Mario Soto, scoring on Harold Baines’ single. Walker led off the fourth against Soto with a solo homer, his team-high fourth of the season.
