Amoco office will close in favor of Iowa location
March 25, 1988
Fifty full-time and about 150 part-time Amoco workers will be relocated or lose their jobs by the end of this year.
The Amoco Oil Company decided to close its Telecommunications Center in DeKalb and transfer the activities to West Des Moines, Iowa, said Robert Roemer, public affairs adviser for the Amoco Companies.
The center has been located in DeKalb since 1969 and at 1900 Sycamore Rd. since November 1984, Roemer said.
The operations are being moved to Des Moines, which is presently being used for credit card operations and business administrative offices, Roemer said.
The center in DeKalb referred all questions concerning the move to Roemer.
The center was the nation’s headquarters for the Amoco motor club dispatch telephone number. The number was used to aid traveling motorists who experienced car difficulties and needed road and towing assistance, Roemer said.
“Calls have tripled since the motor club instituted the 800 dispatch number in 1985,” he said.
Roemer said Amoco has expanded the center in DeKalb as much as physically possible, noting the size and space of the building is no longer adequate to successfully complete the operations.
“We are simply busting at the seams in the present building,” Roemer said.
The transfer of operations will allow Amoco to consolidate customer service activity in West Des Moines, Iowa, Roemer said. This is the location where similar activities are taking place and the consolidation would allow Amoco to become more efficient, he said.
Studies confirming the move were done before the Amoco Corporation made the decision, Roemer said. These studies confirmed that this “was the best way to improve customer service and consolidate costs,” he said.
Amoco’s credit card center, located in Kansas City, Mo., will also be moved to West Des Moines, Roemer said.
Roemer said the full-time employees at the center will be offered job opportunities in West Des Moines. These employees will be offered a relocation package also, he said.
The relocation package includes a special moving allowance with the moving process being paid for by the Amoco Company. House-hunting trips and provisions for moving people one at a time also have been arranged, Roemer said.
Part-time employees and those employees who do not wish to move to West Des Moines but will still continue to work at the center will be offered retention bonuses until the consolidation is completely implememted, Roemer said.
Amoco expects to begin the transfer August 1 and complete it by the end of the year.
