Mother of twins delivers quadruplets on Saturday

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. (AP)—Judy and John Simmons will soon need some babysitters at their home in Creal Springs in southern Illinois.

With 4-year-old twins still in their cribs, Mrs. Simmons has given birth to quadruplets: Joshua, Jennifer, Jenny and Judith.

“They seem to be doing fine,” Mrs. Simmons said Sunday in a telephone interview from her bed at St. Mary’s Health Center in Missouri. “We love them all.”

The babies, ranging in weight from 2 pounds to 3 pounds, were born at 1:44 p.m. Saturday, spokeswoman Susan Kerth said.

The girls were in stable condition, while the smallest infant, Joshua, was transferred to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis where he was in serious but stable condition.

Mrs. Simmons said she was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday. The Caesarean delivery lasted 45 minutes. “We didn’t think it would happen so quick,” she said.

Simmons said he’s a laborer in Herrin. The family lives in a three-bedroom home, but they might need more room.

“We’re going to have to get a bigger one,” Mrs. Simmons said. “Either build on or get a new home.”

Simmons said his wife was about 31 weeks into her pregnancy when she entered the hospital. He said they knew they were expecting quadruplets two months into the pregnancy.

“But we didn’t expect to have them so soon,” he said.

Mrs. Simmons declined to say whether she used fertility drugs.
