NIU art dept., WKDI up for extra space

NIU student radio station WKDI and NIU’s art department might be prospects to use space in Kishwaukee Hall if WNIU moves out of the building and into the Palmer Building, 801 N. First St.

Both WKDI and the art department use space in Kishwaukee Hall.

WNIU occupies 2,300 of the 5,000 square feet at Kishwaukee Hall, but it might move out if renovation plans and cost projections for the Palmer Building are accepted by the NIU Foundation Board of Directors.

Michael Lazar, WNIU’s general manager and faculty adviser to WKDI, said, it would “make sense to move WKDI into the space” if WNIU was to move out.

Tom Montiegel, vice president for development and university relations, said the area WNIU occupies is not in good condition.

“It’s in bad repair, it’s cramped and too small,” Montiegel said. “I don’t know why anyone would be interested in it.”

WKDI general manager Helen Frank said WKDI would use the vacated area for remote equipment, extra studio space and album storage.

Lazar said WKDI occupies 600 square feet at Kishwaukee Hall, and the art department is using the remaining space for about half of its fiber/fabric program.

Lazar said the art department might be interested in moving into the vacated area since its fiber/fabric program already is located in part of Kishwaukee Hall.

Art department Chairman Robert Even said if WNIU moves out of Kishwaukee Hall, the art department “would welcome the opportunity to use the space.”

He said, “We’re located all over (campus). We’re severely impacted by the need for more space.”

Montiegel said decisions still have to be made concerning the Palmer Building and plans for moving WNIU and other groups have yet to be considered.
