Three budgets approved by the Student Association Finance Committee Jan. 27 will be used to benefit organizations.
The budgets must get final approval from the SA senate.
The SA Recycling Center was allotted $8,095.16 which will be used for salaries of drivers who pick-up recyclable refuge and employees who sort and stack the refuge at the dump site located west of Stevenson Towers South, said SA Recycling Director Sandy Delery.
The money is needed for the center because “we wouldn’t be able to (run the program) without it,” she said.
Some of the recycling center’s finances require the money “up front” and “right away” and “that’s why the SA helps us,” she said.
The recycling center also will be involved in a grammar school program. Members of the center will visit DeKalb grammar schools and conduct a recycling demonstration, Delery said.
During this demonstration newspaper will be put in a blender and mixed with chemicals used in recycling. The paper will become pulpy and the moisture will be pressed out, Delery said.
The center hopes to encourage the grammar school students to tell their parents about recycling.
The center is working on another extension which would include Greek Row. Delery said bins would be supplied at every greek house for the deposit of aluminum cans and milk jugs.
The Gay/Lesbian Union received a budget of $1,298.06. GLU President Daniel Greenwood said the money will be used for advertisement of meetings and dances and for costs to attend conventions.
Greenwood said the conventions are a “good chance for the GLU to meet people from other organizations” and see how they handle things.
The Pride Letter, read by NIU’s gay community, contains writing contributions from “whoever has anything they want to put in,” he said.
The newsletter also contains material on issues discussed at the conventions they attend. The delegates report information they think the gay community should be aware of, he said. This includes subjects such as AIDS, self-improvement and personal well-being, Greenwood said.
Some of the money will be used for advertisement in The Northern Star and the printing of fliers to promote Gay/Lesbian Awareness Week in April, he said.
BROTHERS, a support group for minority students, will use the $615.66 allotted to them to help finance postage for correspondance and visits to high schools for discussion about plans to attend college, President Chris O’Banner said.
