Davis confronts flier controversy
February 22, 1988
At Sunday’s Student Association Senate meeting SA Vice President Cam Davis opened the floor for discussion of his involvement with the Phi Beta Sigma flier incident.
“I know a lot of you (senators) have been talking behind my back about what I did or didn’t do. I want to thank Joseph (Annunzio) for being the only one to come to me and say, ‘Cam, I am concerned about what happened.'”
On Feb. 18 Annunzio said, “Cam didn’t call anyone, I know he lied. He should resign.”
Phi Beta Sigma, a black fraternity, illegally posted fliers at the end of January. Davis brought a copy of the flier to the senate and the senators gave the fraternity nearly two days to remove the fiers. Davis was supposed to contact the fraternity, but did not.
The senate took away the fraternity’s recognition for one month. After Davis admitted he did not contact the fraternity the senate reinstated recognition.
Annunzio said, “I don’t know if Cam is against blacks or what. I know last semester when my fraternity (Sigma Phi Epsilon) flipped the car over at tailgating (Sept. 12) the matter was never brought before senate—University Programming & Activities was the only office to sanction us. The senate probably would have taken away our recognition for a year.”
Jeff Cufaude, activities adviser for UP&A, said UP&A imposed a sanction against Sigma Phi Epsilon. He said he was not sure if another office also imposed sanctions.
Davis said Sunday, “Those of you who know me can put this (flier incident) in perspective. Some of you, no matter what I say, won’t believe me. I feel like I’ve explained it.”
SA Sen. Dave Stern said, “I want to know what happened—something is a little fishy. If Cam doesn’t know what happened then leave it at that, but I’d like to know what’s going on.”
SA Sen. Alexis Michael said, “Cam made mistakes and admitted it. We shouldn’t drag his name through the mud—this is the end of it.”
SA Sen. Tanya Titre said the discussion was not trivial. “It is the senate’s duty to keep checks and balances. We should set a precedent so things like this won’t happen again. We have to be responsible to question them. This incident made the senate look bad.”
Davis said he never argued against checks and balances. “I don’t believe the SA came out looking like they did a poor job. You (senators) made the correct decision with the information I gave you.
“I have not watched my words as carefully as I should. I guess I’m out of the election mode—I thought the politics ended after the election.”
After the 20-minute discussion, no action was taken and the matter was dropped.
