SA’s voting idea given tentative OK

Valadez said Dalton expressed support for putting information in the mail registration package. Dalton said he sees no problem, in principle, about such an arrangement and that Durfee said it is possible that could be done.
Durfee said Tuesday he would agree to allow the registration in the ballroom. But he said specific ways to make students aware registration is available are unresolved right now.
“We have a conceptual understanding but nothing definite,” Durfee said. “In a couple of weeks we should have the details laid out.”
Valadez said he would like the proposed placement to begin in January. The registration would occur during late registration and schedule completion, the week before the semester begins, and during add/drop, the first week, he said. He said he would like to have some information for students before this semester ends and maybe have fliers for students as they stand in line to enter the ballroom.
Another question still unresolved would be the table’s location. Dalton said that decision would be up to Valadez and Durfee, but he said a table should be located somewhere with high visibility, where traffic is heavy. The only concern is that students understand voter registration is not a requirement for class registration, Dalton said.
SA President Jim Fischer said he would like to see the table near the check-out line so if that line was long students could take care of their voting. He said he has talked to Dalton about it and does not see any problems arising with that plan.
Valadez said, “We’re trying see how it would work inside, and if it doesn’t, it can be moved back outside. It might be better if we’re outside instead of being stuck in a corner. It is hoped that students will be done inside. It was hoped it would be seen as part of the registration process.”
Valadez said he would like to start a voter registration drive in the residence halls and in Greek Row. The SA could set up tables in the residence halls once a week until the deadline for primary or the general election registration comes closer, he said. At that time tables would be available for students every day.
Dalton said he talked to Student Housing Director Donald Buckner after his meeting with Valadez. He said both of them agreed to allow it.
“I don’t know why we couldn’t do that if they wanted to be there,” Dalton said.
Valadez said he will meet with DeKalb County Clerk Terry Desmond Friday. Desmond is in charge of swearing in the voter registrars, he said. Fischer said the SA would need to have students sworn in, but he said representatives from the League of Women Voters might have to do some of the work if students are unavailable.
Fischer said about 20 students have served as registrars in the past, but he said he would like to have as many as 50. He said a goal would be to register as many as 8,000 students.
