SAMS‘ first meeting held tonight for ’88 campaign

NIU’s chapter of Students Against Multiple Sclerosis will hold the first informational meeting of its 1988 campaign at 9 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center’s Heritage Room.

NIU’s SAMS program is part of a national student movement on about 200 campuses to increase public awareness of multiple sclerosis and to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

SAMS Chairman Cathy Raidna said she is hoping for a large turnout at tonight’s meeting.

“I really want to see a larger SAMS this year,” Raidna said. “At other schools, they’re raising about $12,000 to $15,000 a year. I’d like to see our chapter raise that much.”

During the last two years, NIU’s SAMS chapter has raised more than $5,000 towards the fight against MS, including more than $2,000 raised last year.

Raidna said people can benefit from volunteering for SAMS.

“We’re especially interested in people who have personal experience with MS, like volunteers who have afflicted family members or friends.

“We’re looking for anyone with time on their hands who could work with us,” she said.
