Appointee for ROTC committee approved

Student Association President Jim Fischer’s appointment of SA Sen. Joe Annunzio to the University Committee on Reserve Officers Training Corps was approved by the SA senate Sunday.

Annunzio was the only appointee Fischer brought to the senate this week. SA Sen. Alexis Michael motioned to approve Annunzio’s appointment.

Fischer’s last appointment to the committee was of Student Committee On Political Action Chairman Tom Rainey. The appointment was defeated by a close margin at the Oct. 25 senate meeting.

Annunzio will be one of two students of the total 12 individuals serving on the committee whose purpose is to discuss relations between the ROTC and NIU.

Annunzio said he has served actively in the ROTC for the past year. He said he was not aware a committee existed until Fischer’s appointment of Rainey to the committee was discussed. He said he would have applied for a seat earlier if he had known about the committee.

In order to better serve those students involved in ROTC, Annunzio said he would like to form a subcommittee under the university committee.

In other business, SA Vice President Cam Davis concluded the senate approval of over 200 student organizations, the final step in the SA recognition process. Organizations were required in September to submit to the SA necessary information which was then compiled and submitted to the senate for approval.

SA recognition is necessary for all student organizations to publicize events and reserve university meeting rooms.

The organizations received either full or temporary recognition. Temporary recognition was given to those organizations which by nature discriminate between sex, such as fraternities and sororities.

Davis said in past years the senate granted these organizations full recognition, although their sexually discriminating membership code violated the SA recognition code. He said the senate this year will grant only temporary recognition to these organizations until a bylaw can be created in the SA recognition code to accomodate these types of organizations.

Mediating Sunday’s meeting was NIU student Karen Stanley, one of the three nominees for SA senate president pro-tempore. Other nominees are Todd Kuzma and Mark Harkness.

Each of the nominees was assigned to mediate an SA senate meeting. The Internal Affairs committee will present their nominee recommendation at the Nov. 15 senate meeting and senators will make the final vote.

Fischer said NIU’s Nov. 7 Parents’ Day was “all in all, very successful.” Fischer congratulated SA Sen. Anne Rapp, who organized a letter-writing booklet to prompt parents to write legislators about Gov. James Thompson’s budget cuts to higher education.
