Women swimmers hit road

With two home victories under its belt, the NIU women’s swimming and diving squad looks to test its competitiveness on the road with a pair of duals away from home.
The Huskies will travel to Green Bay, Wis., to face Wisconsin-Green Bay at 6 p.m. Friday, and then swim against Wisconsin-Madison at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“It’s still early in the season, and while we have no indication of Green Bay’s recruits, I feel we are ready to meet the challenge this weekend,” said NIU coach Mike Burt. “It’s important for us to swim well against Green Bay to get ready for Madison.
“Madison will present the biggest challenge of this semester for us. They’re pretty strong in the distance free and backstroke. Our first goal is to try to win the meet. If not, then we at least want to take it down to the last relay. I think we have a legitimate shot this year, but we must be near-perfect to do it. I think if we are able to do that, it shows we’re upgrading our program, and if not this year, then the next couple of years, we’ll be on an even keel with Wisconsin.”
While Burt expects a total team effort to win both dual meets on the road, NIU can look to multi-event winners Lynette Zeitz and Laura Webster. Zeitz claimed the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly, and Webster won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke against Illinois-Chicago. Webster also won the 500-yard freestyle in NIU’s win over Northern Iowa.
