Field hockey team goes 1-3

Scoring only one goal in 210 minutes of play did not sit especially well with the NIU women’s field hockey squad.

Following three road losses, the Huskies rebounded to soundly defeat Louisville 11-0 Sunday on the turf at the St. Louis Soccer Park. NIU opened its four-match weekend Friday with a 2-1 loss to SIU at McAndrew Stadium in Carbondale, Ill. That loss was followed by a pair of defeats handed out by Southwest Missouri State (1-0) and St. Louis University (2-0) Saturday in St. Louis.

Prior to Sunday’s lashing of Louisville, NIU’s lone goal of the weekend was scored by freshman Julie Teaman in the first half of the SIU match.

Junior Anne Zalewski broke things open for the Huskies in the first half of the St. Louis match with her first of three goals at the 5:53 mark. Zalewski, who had been scoreless this season, also assisted on three other goals.

“Anne really came out of her shell today,” NIU coach Laurie Bell said. “Anne has been a consistent player for us and she really got it going today.”
