Men’s tennis squad to take on Badgers
October 1, 1987
The NIU men’s tennis team will try to keep its undefeated record intact when it travels to Nielson Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis., Saturday.
The Huskies, who have a 5-0 dual-meet record, have overcome the injuries from last weekend, and will enter the match with their original singles and doubles teams, including Emil Bijleveld, who has not played recently.
“Emil has responded well to the treatments,” coach Carl Neufeld said. “He’ll be playing No. 3 singles this week, but normally he’s the second-best player. He makes a big difference on our team.”
The Huskies will enter the match having beaten UW twice last year, 7-2 and 7-4. Neufeld feels this will give NIU more encouragement to win.
“It gives us more incentive,” Neufeld said. “They’ll be psyched up for us because we beat them and it’s their first match of the season. There will be no excuses.”
Neufeld is not expecting standout performances from just one or two players, but rather from all six of his netters. He expects his doubles teams to play especially well.
“Both teams are evenly matched, so it comes down to doubles,” Neufeld said. “They’ve improved significantly with three new players in the lineup. We need good performances from everyone.
“I think it will be a 5-4 or 6-3 match, but it will be exciting.”
