Participation is key to events’ success

Noble ideas often are few and far between. Generally, they arise out of some sort of turmoil and are considered a way to quell the unrest.

However, there sometimes are problems in the transition between the idea and actualization stages of these noble ideas. Something gets lost between thought and action.

Thus, it unfortunately comes as no surprise to see the poor reception that has been meeting Unity Through Diversity Week events thus far. Two events held Sunday—a forum on white racism and a discussion about discrimination against homosexuals—each drew crowds of four.

Both topics are of immeasurable concern on campus, especially considering the recent cases of discrimination in and around the NIU community. And both events were fairly well-publicized in enough time to merit better attendance.

Yet, each fell victim to something that has affected the university for some time—apathy.

Unity Through Diversity Week certainly was and is a noble idea. Gary Henderson from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs should be applauded for his efforts in putting the week together and publicizing its numerous events.

Fortunately it’s still early in the week. There are many events still scheduled and the opportunity is still out there for people to gain a better understanding of the problems faced by all who are subjected to discrimination.

opefully members of the university community will realize this and rise to the occasion.

Unity Through Diversity Week provides the perfect opportunity for everyone to start dismantling the walls of discrimination. It’s the perfect chance to heighten awareness of discrimination and raise suggestions of what can be done to lessen its effects.

Everyone—especially those who were the most adamant about stopping discrimination—should take some time out of their schedules to participate in Unity Through Diversity Week. It is only through mass events like those scheduled for this week that problems of the magnitude of discrimination can begin to be solved.

Unity Through Diversity is a noble idea. Don’t minimize its potential by counting on the other guy to do the talking. Get out and become part of Unity Through Diversity Week.
