April 5, 1987
A new provost candidate was chosen by the Provost Search Committee last week to replace the candidate who withdrew her application Wednesday.
Warren Phillips of Takoma Park, Md., will be on campus today and tomorrow to be interviewed by various university groups, said James Lankford, Provost Search Committee co-chairman.
Phillips is replacing Norma Rees of the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, who revoked her application in order to take a different position elsewhere.
Currently on sabbatical from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Campus, Phillips was acting vice chancellor for academic affairs there from 1984 to 1986. At the University of Maryland-College Park Campus, he was assistant vice president for administration in 1984, and from 1979 to 1982 he was acting chair of the government and politics department.
Phillips earned his doctorate in political science from the University of Hawaii in 1969. In 1966, he earned his master’s from San Francisco State College, and in 1963 he received his bachelor of arts at Northwestern University.
Phillips served as a consultant for various groups including the Maryland State Legislature, the Departments of State and Defense and the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. In addition, he has received numerous research grants and has published monographs, books and various articles.
Tomorrow, Phillips will speak with university community members in an open forum which will be held in Gabel Hall 119 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
