Chicago recruits join Huskies
April 14, 1987
NIU men’s basketball coach Jim Rosborough completed the task of strengthening the Huskie backcourt Monday with the signing of Chicago prep guards Stacy Arrington and Donald Whiteside to national letters of intent.
Arrington, a 6-foot 2-inch, 172-pound shooter from Calumet High School, and Whiteside, a 5-9, 149-pound court general from Leo, both draw high praise from Rosborough who had utilized the autumn signing period to ink 6-8 forward Brian Banks of DeLaSalle, 6-5 small forward Donnell Thomas of Robeson and 6-4 guard Jo Jo Jackson of Lockport.
“Stacy had about as good a summer as anyone in Chicago,” Rosborough said. “We’ve been extremely interested since then and he comes from an excellent program with (former NIU assistant) Johnie Butler.
“He’ll be a swing guard for us and he has unlimited potential. Offensively, he’s a good shooter, extremely quick jumper, with a good feel for the game which is why he’s not exclusively a shooter.”
In addition to being a First-Team All-Catholic selection, Whiteside earned First-Team Chicago Catholic All-Area notice, was an All-Tournament pick for the Kankakee Christmas Classic and received a Chicago Tribune Player of the Week honor as well.
