The NIU Alumni Association named Everett D. Greinke, the United States deputy undersecretary of defense for international programs, as the recipient of the 1987 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Greinke earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1951. He majored in chemistry and minored in mathematics. Greinke received a master of science degree in chemistry from NIU in 1956.

Susan Lund, acting director of Alumni Programs, said the award is given for outstanding achievement in the alumni’s profession. “The recipient is nominated by other alums and faculty, who are aware of their achievements,” she said.

Richard Boardman, chairman of the awards committee, said the committee met two times during the selection process. He said the committee first sent out a letter to all department heads to remind them of the award, and asked them to make nominations.

Boardman said the pool of about 50 applicants was narrowed to 10 at the first meeting of the awards committee. The winner was selected at the second meeting.

Greinke has held many government offices, including scientific advisor to the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, director of NATO/European Affairs, Office of the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense, and International Programs and Technology. He also has received many awards, including the Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Medal and the Defense Distinguished Service Medal.

Greinke said he remembers NIU as a friendly school in which he received a good education, developed lifelong friendships with his professors and met his future wife.

“It is a great honor and I was surprised and pleased. I am looking forward to coming back to NIU and renewing acquaintances,” he said.

Lund said Greinke will receive his award in the form of a plaque on Saturday, May 9, at the NIU Graduate School Commencement because all the colleges are represented at that ceremony.
