Senior paces men’s golf team

Because of the teams competing at Saturday’s 18th Annual Marshall University Invitational, NIU men’s golf coach Jack Pheanis was not the least bit upset with the 11th-place finish.

“We’re in the middle of the pack overall,” Pheanis said. “But scorewise we’re right there with some very good teams.”

NIU’s 912 total was led by lone senior Tim Giger, whose 226 score placed him 20th individually. Teammates Chad Behrends and Charlie Sloan were close behind at 228 and 229, respectively.

“Considering our youth, this was a very good tournament for us,” Pheanis said.

National powerhouse Ohio State won its fifth straight Marshall Invite title, ninth in 18 occasions, with an 11-stroke margin, for an impressive 877 finish. Runner-up Miami compiled an 888 final.
