Fashion show aids Special Olympics
March 3, 1987
The Beta Rho chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority sponsored a fashion show Sunday to benefit the Special Olympics.
The show took place at the Jungle, 1027 W. Hillcrest, with fashions supplied by Clothes Encounters of Batavia, said Mary Henderson, ASA treasurer. Henderson is co-chairman of the project along with Marinela Imana.
Imana said, “The turnout was good considering this was our first time for a fashion show. I think we did well for the amount of publicity we did.”
“Brands such as West Palm Beach, Polo Club, and Gunnysack were just a few of the 25 outfits modeled,” Henderson said. All of the clothes were for a girl’s spring or summer wardrobe, she said. The girls from ASA wore JAM shorts to get the spirit up for spring break.
enderson said each sorority house was represented by one model and each model had a fraternity-member escort.
“All the houses were very helpful by each donating $25 to help rent the Jungle,” she said.
Angie Markakis, ASA member, said the fashion show was a new idea to raise money for their philanthropy. “The fashion show turned out fairly well and brought in some money for the Special Olympics. The clothes were purchased afterward at discount prices,” Markakis said.
Henderson said the public received a 15 percent discount and the models got a 20 percent discount. The sorority with the most girls in attendance received a 10 percent discount, she said. Delta Phi Epsilon and Sigma Kappa tied for most attendants, Henderson said.
The girls at the fashion show went to the basement of ASA afterwards to use dressing rooms. Each of the 25 different modeled outfits was available in three seperate sizes. Sweaters and swimsuits were also available for discount prices, Henderson said.
Imana said two raincoats, donated by Clothes Encounters, were raffled off. “Two pizzas from Lukolos, and tans from Competitive Edge and European Tan were also raffled off,” Imana said.
