Good weekend for tennis squads

NIU’s men’s tennis team defeated Wisconsin for the second time this season, and the women’s team captured two wins Saturday after a setback Friday.

The men netters grabbed a 4-2 lead after singles play, which is somewhat surprising, on their way to a 5-4 triumph. In most matches, NIU Coach Carl Neufeld admits, the Huskies have succeeded best in doubles play, but for once NIU did not need to win two or three doubles contests for a team victory.

Dan Bowers and Mike Hill were the comeback combination which scored a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over John Zerweck and Jim Schneider in the No. 2 doubles slot to clinch the victory, boosting the Huskies’ season record to 16-10. Wisconsin dropped to 6-5 on the year.

The women’s team started the weekend on the downside with a 5-4 loss at Southern Illinois Friday, but bounced back to knock off Illinois-Chicago 9-0 and Missouri 8-1 in a non-conference dual meet Saturday.

Senior Sari Dinerman, who has been nursing an injured foot the past week, moved to No. 6 singles where she was undefeated over the two days. Dinerman also teamed with fellow senior Torrey Lott for three wins in doubles competition.

Sophomore LeeAnne Milne was also successful at her No. 1 singles spot in all three matches. Milne defeated SIU’s Ellen Moellering 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 and rebounded against UIC’s Gigi Otto for a three-set win. Otto won the first set 7-6 on a 7-5 tiebreaker before Milne came back for 6-3 and 6-1 decisions. Her final singles victory came over Missouri’s Sarah Parker, 6-2, 6-1.

NIU returns home for its next match when the Huskies host Wheaton College 3 p.m., April 8, at the West Campus Courts.
