As a member of the Student Association Speakers Committee from 1983 to 1986, I was very glad to learn of Jesse Jackson’s recent speech at NIU. It is good to know that since its reorganization last spring, the new (and supposedly improved) CAB Speakers Committee is capable of programming more than one major speaker in an academic year.

In past years, it was not uncommon for the SA Speakers Committee to program a major speaker every month in addition to the great number of mid-level speakers sponsored by the many organizations on campus. It seems that this effectiveness of past years has been greatly diminished.

Hopefully, the effectiveness of past years can be reinstated soon in order to provide the number and quality of speakers that an academic community the size of NIU deserves.
