Burglaries plague local businesses
February 20, 1987
Broken windows and pried open cash registers were the trademarks of four burglaries to West Lincoln Highway businesses late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
DeKalb Police Detective Jim Kayes said the burglaries were probably all committed by the same person. All the burglaries involved breaking windows to enter the businesses, and all the cash registers were pried open with the cash taken, Kayes said.
The Crystal Pistol Beach Club, McDuffy’s Restaurant, Oriental Foods and Accent Floral Shop were all broken into between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 5:40 a.m. Thursday, the police report stated.
The Crystal Pistol Beach Club, 1312 W. Lincoln Hwy. was broken into Wednesday night. The burglar entered the building through a broken window after a large stone was thrown through the windows on the building’s north side.
Police found a small step ladder outside the broken window. One of the cash registers was removed from its original place, and pried open with a wrench. Police said an undetermined amount of cash was taken from the register, and nothing else was disturbed.
McDuffy’s Restaurant, 1262 W. Lincoln Hwy. was broken into Thursday between 1:45 a.m. and 5:40 a.m. The west side window was broken, and a cash register containing $150 was taken. The estimated total value of the burglary was $1,080.
Oriental Foods, 722 W. Lincoln Hwy. was broken into Wednesday night between 7 p.m. and 9:55 p.m. The southern window was broken and the burglar entered the building by reaching in and unlocking the window latch. The cash register was taken to the office, and pried open with a screwdriver. Police said $30 in cash was taken, but nothing else was missing.
A police officer came to Oriental Foods to assist the officers investigating the burglary, and he noticed a broken window on the south side of Accent Floral, 722 W. Lincoln Hwy., the report stated. At first, the report stated there was no apparent entry to Accent Floral, but later a police department employee said the cash register had been pried open, and $36 in cash was taken.
