SA approves funds for three groups
February 16, 1987
The Student Association Finance Committee Thursday approved about $2,000 in 1987-88 budget requests from three organizations.
The first request, from Students for Rehabilitation for $530.80, passed unanimously. The committee approved $66.40 for advertisements, $5 for postage, $15 for supplies and $35 for printing of fliers.
Also, they received $169 for travel to a state conference and $30.65 for travel to a conference in New Orleans. Students for Rehabilitation also has a revenue figure of $125 which is subtracted from the budget request.
Lindsy Langer, organization representative, said, “The purpose is to give people the opportunity to learn about disabilities.” In addition, we want to give handicapped students the chance to meet other handicapped and non-handicapped students, she said.
“The New Orleans conference is a massive gathering of people from all over the United States,” Langer said. At the conference, members will learn about recent research on disabilities and new trends. The information will be distributed to the students on campus, she said.
Even though Students for Rehabilitation is in need of SA funding, it wants to raise money and become self-sufficient, Langer said. Currently, the organization has bake sales to make money, she said.
Another request, from the National Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan, or El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano De Aztlan (MEChA), for 133.60, passed 7-0 with one abstention. MEChA received $99.60 for advertisements, $20 for posters and $14 for printing of fliers.
oberto Carmona, external coordinator, said MEChA wants to invite the area’s Mexican population to NIU in order to recruit them. He said one way for MEChA to increase its membership would be to communicate with the DeKalb area. Gerardo Velazquez, internal coordinator, said there are now about 58 members in the organization.
Carmona said, “We (MEChA) want to get young kids, especially kids in gangs, attracted to the university to show them there is another way.” The organization visits high schools and junior high schools to tell students the organization exists, so they understand there are opportunities for them. Carmona said he wants them to know they do not have to work in a “steel mill.”
SA Finance committee member Doug Moore said, “It’s a worthwhile organization that is trying to accomplish things, (and) they don’t just have dances.”
The final budget from Ars Nova was approved for $1,131.13. Ars Nova received $10 for telecommunicatons, $15 for postage and $649.20 for advertisements and shows for fall and spring. Also, they received $159.03 for show supplies and publicity for the shows, $163.50 for printing of fliers and $134.40 for travel to Chicago.
