NIU worker dies in office

Co-workers’, paramedics’ efforts to save fail

Janis Priede, an employee of the NIU Budget and Planning Department, died Monday morning of an apparent heart attack in his Lowden Hall office.

Although co-workers and DeKalb Fire Department paramedics attempted to resuscitate Priede, the 38-year-old DeKalb man died on the scene at about 10 a.m.

Priede, 1307 W. Lincoln Hwy. Apt. 6112, graduated from NIU in 1975 with a master’s degree in economics. He worked for eight years as a research associate for the Office of Institutional Research, an office within Budget and Planning. He was also taking classes in accounting at the university, said Nick Noe, director of institutional planning.

Priede also served as 7th Ward alderman on the DeKalb City Council from April of 1975 through April of 1979. Members of the council honored Priede with a resolution expressing sympathy to his family and friends at its meeting Monday night.

Pastor David Medow of First Lutheran Church, 324 N. Third St., said Priede was active in the church and served as secretary of its church council.

Priede is survived by his parents, Karlis and Bertha Priede, 621 Ellwood Ave. Funeral arrangements are still pending at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St.
