Tests on horizon for Peat, Bartlett

NIU offensive guard Todd Peat and defensive lineman Doug Bartlett head for the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis this week.

The 1986 Huskie co-captains were among about 300 players across the country to be invited to the National Football League BLESTOV Combine Physical-Workouts that run Tuesday through Saturday inside the home of the Indianapolis Colts.

“Remember last year how Scott Kellar, Curt Pardridge and Steve O’Malley all did so well at the camp in New Orleans,” said NIU Coch Jerry Pettibone. “They did so well in the strength, agility and speed tests that it helped in the draft.”

Kellar was selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the Colts. Pardridge went in round No. 6 to the San Diego Chargers and O’Malley also was taken by the Indianapolis franchise in the seventh round last April.

Peat completed his collegiate career by making third-team Associated Press All-America last season and equaling the highest post-season honors received by an NIU gridder in the major-college ranks, first set by end Dave Petzke in 1978.

Pettibone moved Peat from tackle to guard this season so the 6-foot-2, 278-pounder guard could use his 5.0 speed in the 40-yard dash to lead on sweeps.

Peat, who also was named the Huskies’ Most Valuable Player, prepped at Champaign Central. He was a two-time All-Big 12 selections on the league championship teams in 1980 and 1981 and special mention All-State in 1981.

Bartlett received honorable mention AP All-America notoriety for the second straight season despite missing the majority of the season with an ankle injury. He still managed to lead NIU with four sacks in 1986. The 6-foot-3, 254-pounder finished his four-season Huskie career with 311 tackles, including 43 for 144 yards in losses.

Bartlett played high school football at Springfield Griffin, where he was named team MVP and honorable mention All-State while leading his team to a 9-2 mark and a state playoff berth his senior year.

NIU linebacker Clarence Vaughn is scheduled to appear in a similar camp for Canadian Football League prospects in Minneapolis, Minn.
