Gymnasts lose to Big Ten foes

The NIU women’s gymnastics team ventured to the land of the Big Ten Conference for a double-dual meet Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

ost Michigan won the meet with a score of 177.45, followed by Wisconsin at 176.40 and NIU with 171.90. The double loss gave the Huskies a 2-2 overall record but NIU Coach Bobbie Cesarek said she felt optimistic about the future.

“Competition-wise, they had more depth than we did,” Cesarek said. “But we weren’t out of the race, we just put ourselves out by not competing well. That was the disappointment of the meet.”

Freshman Martha Unger was NIU’s lone blue-ribbon winner as she won the floor exercise with her 9.30 score. Fellow frosh Julie Wimmers picked up two seconds by finishing runner-up in both the uneven parallel bars (9.05) and vault (9.00). Gretchen Kind was not far behind Wimmers on the uneven bars as she tied for third with a score of 8.95.
