DeKALB — History has been written as the hockey team earned its first win at the Division 1 level.

After losing 7-1 Friday night, the Huskies were able to exact some revenge, winning 3-1. This moves NIU to 1-3 on the season, and 1-1 in Midwest College Hockey conference play.

“Bouncing back from the 7-1 loss on Friday night, to be able to put that game behind us and come out with the win on Saturday is huge,” Rucinski said. “It’s great for the morale of the team.”

This game was the most complete game NIU has had on the young season. Special teams allowed no power play goals while scoring one themselves. Good defense, goalie play and three goals were the formula for the first Huskie win of the season.

“Brian Eisele played great in goal, made some big saves for us,” Head Coach Mike Rucinski said. “We did not give up a power-play goal, which was also good to see. Our special teams got a little bit better overall. We still aren’t clicking on the power-play, but I’m still confident that will come together soon.”

First-year forwards Rodahn Evans and Austin Walny and senior forward Brad Krauser all found the back of the net for the Huskies.

Sophomore goaltender Brian Eisele also made a major impact. Eisele played the third period of Friday night’s game and all of Saturday’s game, allowing only a single goal to the Warriors.

Midland was averaging a tick above six goals per game going into Saturday’s bout. The Huskie goaltender was putting together a highlight tape with his glove, killing off 14 NIU penalties.

“It was great, we’ve been trying to get that win for a few games now and it’s good to finally get that monkey off our backs,” Eisele said.

The Huskies play 7:50 p.m. Friday, when they host the University of Iowa at Canlan Ice Center in West Dundee.
