The women’s basketball team hosts Ball State University Wednesday to close out its regular-season home schedule. It will also be senior night for the Huskies, as they will honor senior guard Mikayla Voigt before the game.

Voigt leads the Huskies in scoring in her final season at NIU, averaging 19.5 points per game and is in consideration for Mid-American Conference player-of-the-year. She has set new conference and program records during her historic season.

Voigt broke the MAC record for points in game scoring 52 points Dec. 8 against Western Illinois University. She also sits in the top ten in program history in scoring with 1647 points in her career as of March 5.

This year wasn’t any different for Voigt as she has been a mainstay in the Huskies lineup since 2015.

In her first season, Voigt became the only player since Amanda Corral in 2011 to start every game as a first-year.

Later that season, Voigt joined teammate senior guard Courtney Woods as the only first-year duo to score 300 points each in a season since 1986.

Although she has had an amazing career on the basketball court, Voigt has done just as well in the classroom.

In the past two seasons, she has been an Academic All-MAC honoree and in 2016 she earned MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honors. In spring 2017, Voigt was named to NIU’s Dean’s list at the end of the semester.

Head Coach Lisa Carlsen said Voigt has been important to the development of the program.

“I think [Voigt] really has exemplified everything you want in a student-athlete on your team.” Carlsen said.

Although tomorrow is her final chance to pick up one last regular-season home victory, Voigt said it’s not just about her.

“You know, it’s not just about me tomorrow, it’s about this team getting a win so we can build momentum as we get in the conference tournament.” Voigt said.

Carlsen said Voigt is right to talk about what a win would do for the team.

“All the underclassmen are going to want to step on the floor and help her get a win, but at the end of the day we are trying to extend our season as long as we can.” Carlsen said.

Voigt said some advice to her teammates and incoming first-years about the NIU women’s basketball program.

“For the program, always make sure you’re willing to put in the extra work and work hard on the days you don’t want to,” Voigt said.

The Huskies will suit up 6 p.m. Wednesday in front of their home crowd against Ball State in hopes of ending the regular season on a high note.
