Upcoming Star Billie Eilish stuns
March 12, 2019
Pop music’s latest hitmaker comes in the form of Billie Eilish, a 17 year old girl from Los Angeles whose music is as tranquil as it is emotionally dense. Her minimalist sound has already garnered her two national tours, an opening act for Florence and the Machine, four Recording Industry Association of America-certified gold singles and one platinum single. Most of Eilish’s tracks are either co-written or produced by her older brother Finneas O’Connell who also performs guitar and keyboards with her at live shows.
Eilish exploded onto the scene in 2016 after the release of her debut single “Ocean Eyes” on her SoundCloud page. The track caught the attention of Darkroom and Interscope Records who released the single worldwide. Eilish’s debut EP titled, “dont smile at me” was released Aug. 11, 2017, and peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 in January 2019. Eilish has released four singles from her forthcoming debut album set to be released March 29, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”
Eilish’s sound follows closely in the footsteps of New Zealand pop star Lorde, breathy vocals surrounded by ethereal synths and percussion. What differentiates the two is Eilish’s dark and melancholy tone that lives from track to track. Melancholy evolves into menacing on tracks like “COPYCAT” and “you should see me in a crown.” One of Eilish’s latest singles, “bury a friend,” is an infectious track whose music video contains eerie visuals mirroring the song’s dark tone.
Eilish has nowhere to go but up in the competitive pop scene; her impressive discography has earned her over 32 million listeners on Spotify. With a music career gaining as much traction as an avalanche, it’ll be fun to see where she’ll be in five years time.
