Netflix releases both old favorites and new treasures in February
February 3, 2019
Netflix is taking an interesting approach to February this year; instead of offering the usual slew of nauseatingly romantic comedies and true love tales, the streaming service is favoring stand-up comedy specials, horror films and foreign dramas.
Armed with 38 original releases, including the highly-anticipated first season of the dark comedy “Russian Doll” and the supernatural horror film “Velvet Buzzsaw,” starring Jake Gyllenhall, Netflix has given audiences quite a variety of content to choose from. Fans of aquatic action adventures will appreciate the re-release of the four “Jaws” films, and Steve Carrell fans can rejoice they can finally add “40-Year-Old Virgin” to their queues again.
Three comedy specials, including Ray Romano’s “Right Here, Around the Corner,” will be released throughout the month, starting with Romano’s on Tuesday. These specials debut along with a four-part limited series, “Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy.”
Season 1 of “Siempre Bruja” or “Always a Witch,” released Friday, is evidence Netflix has vastly expanded its catalog of foreign language media. The series follows Carmen, an Afro-Colombian 17th century witch who travels to the present day after being burned at the stake for witchcraft. Despite the noticeable language dubs for American Netflix users, the show’s messages of eternal love, empowerment and loyalty are riveting.
All hope is not lost for rom-com junkies as Netflix has still built a few promising classics into their lineup. The 2002 romantic comedy “About a Boy,” starring Hugh Grant and Sharon Small, is heartwarming and hilarious, while 1986’s “Pretty in Pink,” written by John Hughes and starring Molly Ringwald, takes a tired plot and perks it up with sensitive, sweet characters and soft touches of humor.
