Women’s Basketball falls to University of Miami

The women’s basketball team winning streak came to an end on Wednesday after a lost to the University of Miami Redhawks 70-45. This was the lowest scoring output for the Huskies this year.
This was a matchup between one the best offenses and defenses in the Mid-American Conference. NIU is ranked second in points per game while the Redhawks are ranked second points allowed only allowing 60.1 points per game.
The Huskies stumbled out of the gate shooting 41.2 percent from the field. The Redhawks did not fare much better to start the game only shooting 42.9 percent from the floor.
Senior guard Mikayla Voigt and Junior guard Gabby Nikitinaite both scored four points to lead the Huskies in the first quarter.
The Redhawks took control of the game in the second quarter scoring 22 points and the defense of NIU struggled. The Huskies only shot 33.3 percent from the field and only scored four points in the paint.
Voigt and Nikitinaite led the Huskies again in scoring seven points in the first half. Their efforts were not enough as the Huskies went into half down 42-26.
The Huskies shooting woes continued after halftime as they only shot 27.3 percent from the field. NIU struggled on defense allowing the Redhawks to shoot 46.7 percent from the field giving them a 58-38 led.
The game was out of reach in the fourth quarter as the Huskies only shot 20.5 percent from the field and lost 70-45.
The Huskies continue MAC play 1 p.m Saturday in the Convocation Center against the University of Toledo.
