The start of Captain America

By Sarah LaLond

75 years ago today, Captain America made his first on-screen debut and became the first Marvel superhero to be portrayed outside of a comic book in “Captain America” (1944).

Rocking a leotard and tights worthy of the 60s Batman and Robin with a modified ski mask as a helmet, our favorite star spangled man, played by Grant Gardner, sets out to fight a poisonous, sonorous villain named the Scarab.

Captain America was created by cartoonists Jack Kirby and Joe Simon in 1941, making a timely appearance to fight Adolf Hitler in the Captain America Comics as World War II raged on overseas.

Although the Captain didn’t hit the American silver screen again until 1990 in “Captain America,” Steve Rogers was busy fighting in the animated TV series “Captain America” (1966), and the made-for-TV live-action movies “Captain America” (1979) and “Captain America II: Death Too Soon” (1979).

Today, Chris Evan has taken up the mantle of portraying Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), starting with “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011).

With the uncertainty of “Avengers: Endgame,” set to premiere in April, this could be the last time to celebrate MCU Captain America as we know him.
