The baseball team picked up their first win of the season over the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders 3-2 in extra innings Thursday.

NIU grabbed the win thanks to an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Kam Smith in the tenth inning to bring home junior infielder Tommy Szczasny.

Szczasny helped the Huskies get one of their first two runs in the third inning, singling to third base and bringing a run home on a throwing error. Junior outfielder Brendon Joyce got NIU their first run with a groundout RBI.

The Blue Raiders got on the board in the fifth with an RBI single by junior outfielder Darrell Freeman Jr. NIU Junior pitcher Tristan Michael balked with the bases loaded in the sixth to bring home the tying run.

Junior Nate Thomas was credited with the win, pitching one and two third innings while striking out three and not allowing anyone to reach base.

NIU, now 1-4 overall, will continue their road tour of Tennessee with a game at 4 p.m. Friday against Lipscomb.
