The Revolutionists

By Amy Caboor

NIU School of Theatre and Dance’s production of The Revolutionists is set to premiere tonight, at 7:30 p.m. in the O’Connell Theatre of the Stevens Building.

The play follows the story of four women living in France during the French Revolution; playwright Olympe De Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former Queen Marie Antoinette, and Caribbean rebel Marianne Angelle. While Marianne searches for pamphlets for her cause, Charlotte shares her plan to kill the zealous Marat, and Marie Antoinette begs to be remembered for more than her life of wealth and royalty. They each also cross paths, interrupting Olympe as she attempts to write a play about women during revolutionary times.

Enjoy this mostly fictional, sprinkled with facts, play about a play that tugs at the heart strings and incites laughter. Through comedy, tragedy, art, and activism, these women stand up for their beliefs in the hope to create a better future.
