DeKALB — The track and field team won the Grand Valley State University Lints Alumni open in Allendale Michigan Saturday. Junior multi-event runner Remy Amarteifio and senior jumper Jehvania Whyte delivered Mid-American Conference Championship-qualifying marks at the meet.

Whyte delivered a winning performance in the triple jump. Her mark of 12.70 meters won the event and was over a meter higher than the second-place mark of 11.45 meters by Grand Valley State junior jumper Alex Reeves.

Whyte earned multiple honors in 2018, including the NCAA Indoor Triple Jump All-American, Outdoor Triple Jump All-American and the 2018 MAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Field Performer.

Amarteifio finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.46 seconds. She has now qualified for the MAC Championships for the third time in her NIU career.

Head Coach Connie Teaberry said she hopes the two qualifying times are just the beginning for her team.

“Several ladies left it all on the track with huge personal bests, and eventually this is what leads to additional MAC auto marks,” Teaberry said to NIU Athletics. “Our talent level is limitless, and we look forward to watching things unfold each competition.”

In the 60-meter dash finals, sophomore sprinter Syanne Johnston placed second with a time of 7.75 seconds. Amarteifio followed shortly behind in second place with a time of 7.82 seconds. Junior sprinter Britney Hew tied Amarteifio for second.

First-year jumper Diamond Riley earned a third-place finish, posting 5.48 meters in the long jump.

Building on the team’s success, junior Neshay Curtis and first-years Taylor Tilman, Jahnetta Jones and Kaitlyn Lewis placed first in the 4×400-meter relay. They finished on top with an overall time of 3:51.38.

Junior distance runner Vivian Overbeck posted a time of 9:54.75 minutes in the 3,000 meter run for a fourth-place finish.

The 800-meter run was a strong event for the Huskies. Sophomore distance runner Nora Finegan won the race with a time of 2:13.95 minutes. Finnegan was followed by sophomore distance runner Meagan Biddle in second place with a time of 2:21.20 minutes. Sophomore distance-runner Brynn Bartlett finished in sixth with a time of 2:23.50 minutes.

The Huskies took first through fifth in the 200-meter dash with first-year sprinter Jehnetta Jones leading the way with a time of 24.71 seconds. First-year sprinter Taylor Tilmon, Amarteifio, Johnston and Hew rounded out the top-5 for NIU.

“The athletes are definitely on the right path,” Teaberry said. “The staff is seeing improvements in technique, and their confidence is building. During the early competitions, the athletes work through heavy legs and soreness, but we had a solid competition today.”

The Huskies finished the meet in third with a combined score of 144 points. The Huskies have four more meets until the MAC Indoor Championships to post qualifying times, leaving the opportunity for better times open.
