Martin Luther King Jr still inspires hope

By Amy Caboor

On this day, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., a man who had undying strength and passion to help people through unrighteous injustice and unfair prejudice.

Starting his civil rights path, he took position as the leader and official spokesman for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. With that experience under his belt, King continued to inform others  about nonviolent protest and civil rights.

Most people know him for his “I Have a Dream” speech that he gave during the March on Washington. This speech has inspired so many other activist movements then and even now. After becoming an icon for change, a federal holiday was established to celebrate King.

King dedicated his life to something that was bigger than himself, something that seemed so impossible for one person to do. Frankly, it is impossible for just one person to do, but with who King was and how he brought people together, he never had to fight truly alone.

This day is to remember someone who willingly fought for the betterment of others, not only for people then, but for people now and years to come. He gave a voice to the millions who felt like their voices have been silenced for a very long time. This shows us how there is hope in change, and how there can still be power to the people if we act peacefully.
