DeKALB — Residents of DeKalb’s third ward welcomed a new alderperson Jan. 14 during a city council meeting. Joyce Stupegia will fill the seat until elections this spring.

After former third ward aldermen Michael Marquardt abruptly resigned Dec. 6, Mayor Jerry Smith had 60 days to appoint and approve someone to fill the vacancy.

Stupegia was appointed by Smith Dec. 28.

The Council approved the appointment at its Jan. 14 meeting.

After she was approved, Stupegia was immediately sworn in and participated in the Jan 14. meeting as the new third ward alderperson.

Stupegia served as a trustee for the DeKalb Police Pension Board for the past year, was a village trustee and was village president for 18 years in Villa Park.

Stupegia voluntarily took up the short-term position and was not a running candidate for the spring elections.
