STEMfest to start low-sensory hour

DeKALB — In efforts to become more inclusive, NIU STEMfest introduces low-sensory hour.

STEMfest runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Convocation Center, with low-sensory hour between 4 and 5 p.m.

As an annual event, STEMfest is a celebration of science, technology, math and engineering, as a way to introduce people to the possibilities within science.

Some individuals struggle in loud, bright and crowded environments, so this year event organizers are introducing low-sensory hour, according to an Oct. 2 NIU news release.

During the low-sensory hour, exhibitors are encouraged to offer quieter activities in place of the loud and flashy ones, lights will be dimmed and speakers will be turned off.

A quiet room will also be available for the entirety of STEMfest so individuals and families can take breaks if the festivities become overwhelming.

Sam Watt, NIU STEM Educator and STEMfest organizer, said low-sensory hour is designed for those with sensory disabilities, including individuals on the autism spectrum, in feeling more welcome at the event, according to the news release.

“We have a lot to do and a lot to see and we want our guests to feel comfortable and welcome,” Watt said in the news release. “We want them to be able to focus on what we have to offer them, instead of on some of the overwhelming sights and sounds inherent to large events.”
