New Sandler special gets nostalgic
October 24, 2018
Adam Sandler proves his comedic musical skills once again in his new Netflix special, “Adam Sandler 100% Fresh,” released Oct. 23. Throughout this special, Sandler touches on various topics, such as electric cars and vaccinations.
The comedian starts off singing about someone getting hit by an electric car because she did not hear it coming, which gets laughter from the audience. He continues with this by making fun of electric cars and how the cars would communicate with him through flashing their lights.
He continues with a song about a baby’s mom trying to get the baby to say “hi”. The baby eventually says, “help me,” and Sandler makes a joke about how children don’t have a say in whether or not they’re vaccinated.
The montage of all the venues Sandler visits on tour stand out because each song takes place somewhere different, even though he sticks to the same content at each place. The most unique place he performs in is a subway station, where he wears a hoodie and sunglasses and sings about a grandma dying while people pass by. Later on, people join in by dancing and recording Sandler on their cell phones.
As the show goes on, his songs become more heartfelt and genuine. Toward the end, he sings about important people that have had a big impact on his life, like the late Chris Farley and Sandler’s wife, Jackie.
He brings up Farley’s time on “Saturday Night Live” and his skits like “Chippendales Audition” and “Lunch Lady Land.” Sandler’s tribute to Farley was genuine, and it received the best reaction from the crowd.
Sandler ends the special with a song dedicated to his wife and growing old with her as he shows a slideshow of pictures. Jackie supports her husband, and even says “screw you” to the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sandler started things off with a light and funny tone, but viewers can see a more genuine side of him not normally seen as the show goes on. The special is an encouraging return to form for Sandler, reminding audiences of what originally made him funny.
