Bears trade for All-Pro Khalil Mack

Chicago — The Bears welcomed a new monster to the Midway Saturday when they acquired All-Pro defensive end Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders, according to Adam Schefter.

The 2016 Defensive Player of the Year had been stuck in a lengthy holdout due to contract disagreements with new Raiders team president and head coach Jon Gruden.

The Bears traded their 2019 and 2020 first round draft picks, their 2020 third round draft pick and their 2019 sixth round draft pick. In return, the Raiders sent over Mack and a second round pick, along with a conditional fifth round draft pick.

Mack had 61 tackles and 10.5 sacks over 16 games last season for an underachieving Raiders team that fired its head coach immediately after the season was over.

Chicago was in rebuild mode last season, focusing on developing young talent such as quarterback Mitch Trubisky and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd. While the rebuild has progressed faster than expected, the Bears still have one of the youngest defensive units in the NFL.

The Bears saw surprising contributions from their rookies last season, with fourth round draft picks Eddie Jackson becoming fixture at safety immediately upon entering the league and Tarik Cohen complimenting Jordan Howard in the backfield as a dual threat rushing and receiving running back.

The acquisition of Mack may push the Bears’ top 10 defense over the top; the presence of a former Defensive Player of the Year and elite pass rusher still in his prime should instill fear into every quarterback within the division.
