Women’s tennis drops weekend match
April 2, 2018
It was another loss for the women’s tennis team Sunday to the University of Toledo Rockets.
It was also another tough day for the Huskies in doubles play as they were not able to win a match.
At the No. 1, senior Abigail Dekkinga and freshman Thisuri Molligoda were only able to put up two points against Sidnay Huck and Loloro Chishaki but not enough as they fell 6-2.
The second match of doubles which between the freshman duo of Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko and the Rockets’ Deedee Leenabanchong and Colleen O’Brien was unfinished at 5-3.
It was the Rockets’ Megan Miller and Thalita Rodrigues getting the shutout win over senior Evelyn Youel and sophomore Brodie Walker 6-0.
Molligoda and Leenabanchong started things off in match No. 1 of singles.
The first set went into advantage. However, Molligoda wasn’t able to finish and couldn’t get things to click in the next as she fell 7-5, 6-1.
In match No.2, Potsi and Huck put up a great match going in to advantage, but it was the Rockets’ Huck getting the win 7-6, 6-4.
Dekkinga had no answers for O’Brien in match No.3, only scoring one point in both sets she fell 6-1, 6-1.
In match No.4, Youel was able to push Chishaki to an extra set, but it was a win for Chishaki in the end.
Walker showed the hot hand yet again in match No.5 this weekend with her fourth straight singles win, knocking down Aleck 3-6, 6-4, 7-4.
“She is playing really great tennis at this point,” said Head Coach Tanya Mahefu. “It’s really exciting to see and for her future going in to next year.”
Things didn’t look good for Slisko in the last match of the afternoon against Rodrigues. She only scored a point in the first set but stepped it up in the second. However, it still wasn’t enough as she was defeated 6-1, 6-4.
The Huskies will be back on the courts 6 p.m. Friday as they travel to Buffalo, New York to take on the Bulls.
